Willie C. Bass

SPRINGFIELD - Willie Cephus Bass, 77, departed this life on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center. Born in New Brockton, Alabama, he was a son of the late Frank Bass and the late Frances (Goseal) Bass. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he moved to Springfield in 1947, was employed at UniRoyal Tire Company for 22 years, and retired from the Springfield Water Dept. He had been a partner of Bass Brothers Cleaners and Record Store, and was a former member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. He was deeply loved and appreciated by his family and will be greatly missed. Pre-deceased by three days by his older brother, Louis F. Bass Sr., he was the youngest and last surviving of 10 children. He leaves his wife, Mary (Reddick) Bass of Springfield; a son, Thomas J. Bass (and his fiancee, Doris Ladas) of Springfield; three daughters, Donna Bass Johnson and Cheryl Bass Briscoe, both of Alexandria, VA, and Ruby Helen Williams of Montgomery, AL; three grandchildren, Donovan Bass Briscoe, Ann Helene Scarlett, and Carolyn Denise Rosser; three great-granddaughters; and two sons-in-law, Michael Donovan Briscoe and Mr. Williams. The calling hour is 11 a.m.-noon Thursday at Harrell Funeral Home, 355 St. James Ave. followed by funeral services at noon a.m., with interment at 11 a.m. Friday at the Massachusetts Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.
