Mary Dean Bass
Angels in Heaven sing in celebration of the homecoming of Mary Dean Bass, age 83, of the Sulphur Springs community, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at her home.
Mary Dean was born in Beebe, Ark., on Aug. 23, 1926, to the late William and Grayce Ann Culbreath, the second of four children. She moved with her family in her youth to Michigan and Oklahoma, but returned in her youth to Arkansas where she met and married the love of her life, Thomas Fay Bass. Together they raised eight children of their own and helped raise countless neighborhood children, whom they loved as their own.
Mary Dean was devoted to her 15 grandchildren, all of whom she was very proud. She was known throughout the entire Sulphur Springs community as "Grandmommy Bass" as all who met her loved her. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a wealth of neighborhood children whom she lovingly referred to as her grandbabies.
She was a soft-spoken, devoted servant of Christ, and was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher and worked in the W.M.U. and Girl's Auxiliary. She was involved in many more church programs and activities. Her greatest legacy was helping lead a great many souls to Christ through her example, testimony and witness.
She was an accomplished seamstress and an expert at crochet and knitting. She was somewhat of a legend in the community, as nearly every newborn in the community was blessed with a baby blanket or sweater set she lovingly crafted. People all over the country who were familiar with her exquisite pieces, sought her handiwork. The Hope Crisis Center was a frequent recipient of her handiwork, as she frequently donated afghans, baby clothing and blankets that she had thoughtfully made with love.
Mary Dean was preceded in death by a son, Danny "Bo" Bass; her husband, Thomas Fay Bass; a granddaughter, Janet Renee Bass; infant grandson, Cameron Bass; her parents, her oldest brother, Huel Culbreath; and a sister, Alice Culbreath Saunders.
She is survived by her brothers, J.C. (Dolores) Culbreath, Tommy (Ellen) Culbreath, and Johnny Culbreath; her children, Ruth Ann (Joe) McClain, Thomas Richard (Mary) Bass, Carolyn Joyce (Bob) Upshaw, Robert Earl (Jackie) Bass, Becky Jo (Adam) Harrison, David Wayne (Tish) Bass, and Tresa Jane Bass; a daughter-in-law, Lenora Bass; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, 6 to 8 p.m. at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, 10 a.m., at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church with Revs. Billy West and Bill Kiggins officiating. Interment will follow at Fitzhugh Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, 9127 Sulphur Springs Road, Pine Bluff, Ark., 71603, or Gideons International.
