The Harvey Girls: Women Who Opened the West

However, secret romances between Harvey employees and Harvey Girls were widespread. Addie Park (see Chapter 4) remarks that ?where there?s a will there?s a way? and dated fellow employee Frank Bassett, the chef of the Barstow Harvey House, for seventeen years before marrying him. ?Frank was here in Barstow when I first arrived. We began dating immediately, but we both had family responsibilities and then World War II came, so we didn?t marry for seventeen years.?
Addie and Frank decided to marry in 1944 during Addie?s vacation. Frank was able to get ten days off so they decided to hop a Union Pacific train from a neighboring town where the Harvey house crowd wouldn?t see them. After marrying in Las Vegas, and a honeymoon at Big Bear Lake, the couple returned to work as usual:

About noon one of the girls noticed my ring and she let out a yell and dragged me all the way around the counter showing the railroadmen and everyone. That first night we spent at the Harvey House, Frank slept in the girls? dormitory. The next day, Irwin Krause, the manager, had one of the guest rooms with a bath fixed up for us. And that?s where we lived until Frank retired in 1954.
