Wm. Bass of Lee County Dead
Prominent Official Expired Suddenly at Meeting of Woodmen of the World

Tax Collector William M. Bass, of Lee county, one of the best known and highest esteemed citizens in this section of the state, dropped dead last night about nine o?clock, while he was attending a meeting at the Woodmen ball in Opelika.
Mr. Bass was taking part in the exercises last night, having just completed his part in the initiation of one of the new members and seated himself when he passed away, apoplexy being the cause of his death.
Than the deceased gentleman there were few better known citizens in Lee county. He had been tax collector of the county for the past fourteen or fifteen years and was nominated in the primary last spring for the ensuing term.
Mr. Bass, who at the time of his death was seventy years of age, was born at Beulah, Lee county, where he lived for the greater part of his life moving to Opelika in recent years. He was a devout member of the Baptist church, always taking an active part in the work. He was prominently identified with several fraternal orders, including the Masons and Woodmen of the World.
The deceased was in his young manhood a proud defender of the southern states, he having gone to the war at the outbreak and continued in the service of the Confederacy for several years.
The news of the death of this prominent citizen of Alabama will be received as a distinct shock to his many friends throughout his native state as well as the state of Georgia, where he was well known. He was in a perfect state of health yesterday, going around his daily duties at the court house as usual.
Surviving the deceased gentleman is one sister, Mrs. Eliza Holt, who lived with her mother; three sons, Rastus Bass of Opelika, Noah Bass of Opelika, and Theopolis Bass of Lee county, and one daughter, Mrs. Alford, of Opelika.
The funeral services will be held from his former residence at Beulah Wednesday morning at ten o?clock, Rev. W.P. Hines, pastor of the First Baptist church of Opelika, officiating. The interment will follow at Beulah.
