Melvin N. Bass
Melvin N. Bass, 70, died Sept. 5, 2000, in his home following a brief illness.
Mr. Bass was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was a resident of Hampton Roads since 1972. He was the son of the late Philip and Ethel Bass and was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Bass. He was a member of Congregation Beth El in Norfolk.
Mel earned a master's degree in education from the University of Buffalo in 1952. He was associated together with his father, Phil, in Weinberg & Bass Clothiers for many years. Mel taught in the Buffalo High School system as well as being involved in religious school teaching and administration.
He was a familiar voice on Western New York radio in the 1960s hosting a Jewish program of music and commentary. In later years, he played the saxophone with the Frailache Klezmer Band in Norfolk. Mel served as an exemplary hospital administrator in Virginia and Charleston, W.Va., until he retired in 1993.
Mel's thoughtful, gentle manner and kindness endeared him to family and friends in a most special way.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Marlene Herer Bass of Norfolk; a daughter, Deborah Bass Sadoff and her husband, Kenneth, of Buffalo, N.Y.; a son, Dr. Richard Bass and his wife, Dr. Patricia Speer, of Portsmouth; a sister, Marilyn Bass Buxbaum and her husband, Stuart, of Norfolk; and two grandsons, Philip Asher and Benjamin Jacob Bass.
A temple service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Congregation Beth El by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Jacob Tessler. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, 1244 Thompkins Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 or Congregation Beth El, 422 Shirley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23517.
The family will be at the Buxbaum residence, 1104 Botetourt Gardens, A-1, Norfolk, following the funeral service. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
