Barbara Jean Johnson Bassett (Picture included)
After a valiant struggle with multiple health issues, our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Barbara J. Bassett died peacefully on January 24, 2014, at age 83. Born October 20, 1930, Barbara was a third generation Sonoma County resident; daughter of Andrew and Ruth Johnson of Penngrove. She settled in 1957 with her husband Bill and her family in Sebastopol, where she created beautiful gardens and redwood groves. Barbara spent the years when her children were young at home on the farm; raising vegetables, fruits and animals and was active in 4-H with her children. She retired in 1989 after 20 years with Community Hospital in SR, where she worked in Admissions and Medical Records. Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, WR "Bill" Bassett. She leaves sisters Dorothy Vyenielo and Nancy Arvold, brother Jim (Gwen) Johnson, daughters Geri West (Dick Bailey), Judi Goodin (Steve), Jeanne Fernandes (Joe) and son Bill Bassett (Janel); as well as honorary family members; Bobby Becucci and Tom Schamp. Barbara also leaves six treasured grandchildren; Andrew (Catherine) and Ethan West, Julie and Jayson Fernandes, Sarah and Paul Goodin and numerous Bassett, Johnson, Roberts, Winsby, Fritzsche and Vyenielo cousins. Family was central to Barbara's life; she traveled across the US and to Europe to be with her children and grandchildren to celebrate weddings, graduations and other special events. She was the #1 fan at hundreds of concerts, lectures, plays, soccer matches and track meets. Barbara was a gifted and generous woman who always made a place at the family table and loved sharing starts from her beautiful garden. Her canned peaches, pears, applesauce and green beans were prize-winning. She helped her family raise numerous cows, horses, kittens, pigs, puppies and sheep; and had a particular knack for healing sick and injured animals. She joins a legion of loved ones in heaven. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held Saturday, March 29 from 2- 6 p.m. at the Sonoma County 4-H Center, 6445 Commerce Blvd, Rohnert Park, CA 94927. Barbara would love it if you would wear something purple. In lieu of flowers, Barbara's family suggests donations be made to Planned Parenthood of Sonoma County, Sonoma-Napa Alanon/Alateen or Sonoma County 4-H Foundation.
