Paul Warner Bassett
September 4, 1943 ? December 21, 2024
On December 21, 2024, Paul passed away peacefully. His nearly ten-year battle with Parkinson's was over. Not once did he complain, a tribute to his character.
Born September 5, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio to Mariana (nee- Warner), an educator, and Paul H. Bassett, a Methodist minister. Paul spent his elementary school years in Ohio, then attended Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana, for High School. Upon graduation he pursued a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (University of Toledo) followed by a Master's Degree in Computer Science (Bowling Green University). During his undergraduate studies Paul enjoyed flying his Cessna around the country and islands, served as a Medic in the Army National Guard, and worked in the lab at General Mills, a job he adored.
Paul came to Phoenix after accepting a position at Sperry Aviation. He left aviation and continued his career in Telephony at GTE, where he was honored to join the team creating the technology required for streaming video. Paul was deeply committed to the scientific and engineering communities, frequently reading scientific journals and serving as a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). After he retired, he found time for woodworking, road trips in his Jeep, crafting his lattes, enjoying his poodles, and his 150-gallon fish aquarium.
Paul is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alice Bassett, son, Hank Dabibi, daughters Alexandria Bassett (Todd Johnston), and Samantha Bassett, granddaughter Ava Johnston (the joy of his life) and his sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Bassett.
Funeral arrangements at All Saints' Episcopal Church, Phoenix, are pending.
