      Co-Milliners Maintain Two Establishments

The millinery firm of Emile George is a combination of two talented young men who started out to be industrial designers and who, in fact, still are. They have a thriving wallpaper business in addition to their custom hat salons in New York and Chicago. Their hearts, however, are in millinery.

      STUDIED DESIGN

The George part of the combination is George Vollum, who came from Eau Claire, Wis. He studied industrial design at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. One of this important contributions in the field was a ?whistling teakettle.? From there he went on, being a young man of great versatility, to the design of baby carriages. In 1937 he met Emile Bassett and they started their wallpaper firm of Bassett and Vollum.
Basset, the Emile part of the combination, studied interior decorating at the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, O. His career has been focused on decoration, his interests divided equally between interiors and fashion. Both men feel that there is a decided link between the colors and trends in the home and the trends in apparel.

      FASHION AHEAD

To quote them: ?Fashion is ahead of interiors ? that is, what the woman is wearing today she will seek for interiors later. She becomes accustomed to colors in her clothes and she subsequently looks for the same background.?
During the last two years they have become fascinated with hats and they showed their first custom-made collection in Chicago. This fall they have opened their second salon on Madison Ave. in New York.
