Emory P. Bass
Emory P. Bass, versatile actor of stage and screen, passed away March 4, 2015 at The Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills, California. He was 89. The versatile actor of stage and screen was born in August 1925 to Estelle Johnston Bass and his namesake, Emory Bass (former Mayor of Valdosta 1956-1958) in Valdosta Georgia, where he fell in love with the stage at age 6 playing a green elf. After graduating with a degree in journalism, he spent two years at Barter Theatre in Virginia before heading to New York where he landed a tour of "Glad Tidings" with Tallulah Bankhead who remained a friend for life. Other tours included "Everybody Loves Opal" with Nancy Walker, "Time Out For Ginger" with Art Carney and "Woman Of The Year" with Lauren Bacall. On Broadway he appeared in "Teahouse Of The August Moon", "Pal Joey", "Can Can", "Irene" with Debbie Reynolds as well as "1776" and the subsequent film. Abroad he starred in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", and off-Broadway appearances included the revivals of "By Jupiter", "The Boys From Syracuse", "Lysistrata" and Terrance McNally's "Bad Habits". For three years he was the voice of DiscoverCard and among his many TV appearances were "Hart To Hart", "Mr. Belvedere", "Webster", " Murder She Wrote" and was the recurring character of 'Phipps' on "Angie."
