Seventeen army fliers and crewmen were killed today after two B-24 bombers on a training mission locked wings and then crashed on the rugged Salt River Indian reservation, 20 miles northeast of Phoenix, the public relations office at near-by Williams Field reported. Not a man aboard the two big Liberators, based at Davis-Monthan Field, Tucson, escaped. Second Lieut. Earl M. Lieberman, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob M. Lieberman, 3333 East Fairfax Road, Cleveland Heights, and Second Lieut. Merle H. Mahan, 21, son of Mrs. Ammie Mahan, 1566 E. 93d Street, were listed as victims. Staff Sergt. William R. Bassett, 19, Cincinnati, also was killed.
