      Wadsworth Man Killed
W.S. Bassett. Leading Miner, Jumped or Fell From
Train and Was Found Dead Near Werner Plant

Early Tuesday morning trainmen discovered the body of William H. Bassett, a Wadsworth man, lying beside the railroad tracks near the Werner company?s plant. Bassett, it is believed, met his death while alighting from a train. Coroner Davidson examined the remains this morning at Parks? morgue and stated that death was caused by a fracture of the skull, probably sustained by falling headlong against a rail.
Mr. Bassett was 58 years old, and was very well known in Wadsworth, where he was a leader among the mine workers. He was a Mason and Odd Fellow, and a member of the Sons of St. George.
Just what he was doing aboard the train from which he is supposed to have fallen is a mystery. The remains were sent to Wadsworth this afternoon.

From Crystal Bassett, "Willam, according to his son Grover, came over to America without his parents' permission, nor knowledge. He spent a great deal of time working as a miner. According to family sources, he even traveled as far as Alaska to pan for gold. At a certain point in time, he settled in Wadsworth, Ohio, and even served as a time as a Justice of the Peace there. He became involved with the United Mine Workers Union and became one of their officers in this area. His death was somewhat suspicious as he died as a result of having fallen off of a train (a "Doddle Bug" as it was called). Some suspect he was maybe pushed off as the mine officials had many enemies. Burial marker at Section 9, Lot 9, Grave 5 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wadsworth, Ohio."
