A Christmas Party Tragedy
Henry Cook Shoots William Bass, It Is Thought Fatally
Greensboro, Ga., December 26.-(Special) What may probably result as a fatal shooting affray occurred near Siloam, in this county , last night. Henry Cook, a young white boy about nineteen years old, fired a pistol ball through the brain of Bill Bass, a white man, aged about forty.
The difficulty which led up to the shooting occurred in a grove of trees near a residence where a party was in progress. It seems that Bass was at the party, given by the young people of the neighborhood. He was drinking considerably, and during the course of the evening had several wordy spats with Cook and others. Finally it is stated, Bass grossly insulted Cook, and the two went out doors together, Bass following Cook. As the reached a grove of trees Bass, who was still in the rear, made a pass at Cook with a knife, cutting Cook?s coat but nor reaching the flesh. Cook turned, stepped back, and drawing a revolver, fired at Bass. The bullet plowed into Bass?s head and he fell.
When the parties in the house reached them Cook was standing, while Bass lay on the ground unconscious. with his brain coming from the wound. He was taken up and carried into the house and physicians sent for. Cook sent for his father, Mrs. J. R. Cook, and together they came to Greensboro, the father delivering his son to Sheriff English.
Young Cook is in jail to await the result of Bass?s wounds. At last accounts Bass was still alive, but with slight chances of recovery. Bass and Cook are second cousins. The families of the two stand well in the community.
