      Sam Howard Bass Jr.

Sam Bass, a former appeals court judge and state representative from Brazoria County, died Saturday after being injured in a traffic accident. He was 76.

Bass, driving alone, was in a collision Saturday in the 5700 block of Westheimer. Taken to St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, he died while undergoing surgery, his sister, Bettye Hamlin, said. Houston police are investigating the accident.

In 1981, Texas Gov. Bill Clements appointed Bass to a new position on the First Court of Appeals in Houston, which at the time was a civil court serving Harris and 13 other nearby counties. The jurisdiction of such courts now includes criminal cases.

Bass was unopposed in the GOP primary in 1982. In the general election, Bass defeated the Democratic nominee, Walter Boyd.

A month after the election, Clements appointed Bass to a four-year term on the Texas Judicial Council, which studies and reports on the state's courts.

Bass served on the First Court of Appeals until 1993, when he retired.

In 1956, Bass, who lived in Freeport for most of his life, was elected to the first of two terms in the Texas House of Representatives from Brazoria County.

Born in Rosebud in Falls County, Sam Howard Bass Jr. was the son of Samuel H. Bass Sr. and Lula Jenkins Bass of Freeport.

Sam Bass earned an associate of arts degree at Blinn College, attended Cumberland University and earned a law degree from Baylor University in 1953.

During World War II, Bass served as a corpsman at a Navy hospital in California.

He leaves his wife, Frances Beacroft Bass of Houston; a son, Robert E.L. Bass of Freeport; and a sister, Bettye Hamlin of Germantown, Md.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1307 W. 5th St. in Freeport.
