Olga B. Stewart
Olga B. Stewart of New Hartford and Lake Pleasant, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 7, at MVHS Nursing Home, Utica, NY. She was 100.
Olga was born June 9, 1921, in Manhattan, NY, the daughter of Harry F. and Marie Cossenas Bassett. Olga was one of 4 children, 2 sisters and one brother, none of whom are still living. Her parents owned and managed a hotel in the Catskills for many years until it was destroyed by fire. Olga worked in Manhattan as a dental assistant prior to her marriage.
On September 3, 1942, she was married to Jay P. Stewart in New Orleans, LA. At the close of WWII, Jay and Olga settled in New Hartford. While Jay was well known for his Adirondack-themed oil paintings and pencil drawings, Olga also pursued her own artistic muse, creating beautiful pastel portraits which are displayed in homes around the world.
Olga spent over 70 summers in the Adirondacks, first tenting at Moffitt Beach with family and friends, and then at their cottage on Sacandaga Lake, where she enjoyed yoga, crosswords, sewing, cooking and swimming in the bay.
Olga is survived by a son, Marshall Stewart and daughter in law Kathy of New Hartford, and one granddaughter, Caitlin and her husband Matthew Seifts of Lake Pleasant. She is also survived by two nephews by marriage, David and Robert Stewart and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care given to Olga by her neighbors, Anet Magyar and James Skerritt, as well as the extraordinary staff on Barton East at the MVHS Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. 342 Main Street Oneida, NY. There will be no calling hours. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. In Olga?s memory, please consider a donation to Anita?s Stevens Swan Humane Society.
