      BIDDEFORD. George W. Basset, 76, of First Street, died Thursday, November 2, at his residence, after a long illness with cancer. He was born on May 21, 1924, a son of Calvin and Charlotte Eaton Bassett and was educated in Calais, Maine schools.
      On August 15, 1942, he married Veronica J. Oickle at Portland, ME.
      Mr. Bassett was a supervisor in the military, serving for 24 years with the Army Air Force during WW2, Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict, retiring in 1967. He then worked 10 years at Standard Electric in Portland. In retirement he buit a Colonial home in North Yarmouth.
      He was a member of the National Rifleman’s Association and enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening.
      Mr. Bassett was predeceased by a twin brother, John C. Bassett in 1984.
      Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Veronica Bassett of Scarborough: two sons, George R. Bassett of Sweden, ME and Richard E. Bassett of Cumberland, ME, two daughters, Joyce C. Murphy of Scarborough, ME and Janet A. Kimall of Bonita Springs, F; a sister, Pauline Apt of Auburn, ME; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
      There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are by Alpha Cremation Services. 480 Elm.

      George Eaton Bassett, 76

      George Eaton Bassett, 76, of First Street died Nov. 2, 2000, at his home of cancer. Born in Eastport, a son of Calvin and Charlotte Eaton Bassett, he attended Calais schools. On Aug. 15, 1942, he married Veronica Oickle in Portland. Mr. Bassett served in both the Army Air Corps and the Air Force over 24 years, serving in World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring in 1967. He then worked for Standard Electric in Portland for 10 years. He was a hunter and fisherman. His hobbies included computers, cooking, playing the accordion and gardening. Two young sons died previously. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Veronica Bassett of Scarborough; two sons, George R. of Sweden and Richard E. of Cumberland; two daughters, Joyce B. Murphy of Scarborough and Janet Kimball of Bonita Springs, Fla; a sister, Pauline Apt of Auburn; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Falmouth Congregational Church, 267 Falmouth St., with the Rev. Dawn Berry officiating. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, Biddeford.
