      John C. Bass

John C. Bass, a planter of East Carroll parish, La., was born in Hinds county, Miss., August 27, 1843, being the seventh of eight children born to John and Melitia (Mabrey) Bass, who were natives of the "Old North State." The father removed to Mississippi about 1836, where he made his home until 1847, at which time he removed to Louisiana, first locating in Madison and afterward in Ouachita parish, where he made his home until his death in 1853. He was a modest planter, but owned considerable property, consisting of negroes and land, although at one time he had about thirty-five stolen from him. Upon removing to Louisiana his slaves had been placed in charge of a Mr. Gambell, but the latter, taking serious offense at Mr. Bass, stole thirty-five of them, and, strange as it may seem, succeeded in placing them beyond the reach of their just owner, so that they were never recovered. Mr. Bass was a son of Isaac Bass, a native of North Carolina, who was a member of one of the old families of that state. John C. Bass was reared in Louisiana, and was educated in Clinton college, Mississippi, receiving a liberal education, although the opening of the war put an end to his collegiate course. Upon leaving school in 1861 he volunteered in the confederate army, enlisting in Company A of the Fourth Louisiana battalion, commanded by Col. John McEnery, under whom he served until September 21, 1863, participating in the battles of Secessionville, South Carolina and Chickamauga, at the latter place receiving a severe wound, which disabled him for further duty. He returned to his home in 1865, and after the war had closed he taught school for a short time, after which he engaged in merchandising and planting, and is now the owner of quite a large amount of valuable real estate. In 1885 he was appointed to the position of sheriff of East Carroll parish, was elected to succeed himself in 1888, and is the present incumbent of the office, which is the only one he has ever sought. He has filled it with great credit to himself and to the satisfaction of all concerned. He was married in 1877 to Miss Josephine Archibald, a native of Louisiana, by whom he has seven children: Mabrey, Eddie M., John, Isaac, Joseph, Rebecca and Turner, all of whom are at home. Mr. Bass and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and socially he is a Mason. He is modest and unpretentious, and has attained his prominence as a citizen of East Carroll parish by honest merit rather than by self-emulation. In whatever position in life he has been placed he has always endeavored to do as he would be done by, and this is the secret of the warm place he holds in the esteem of all who know him. He is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and is a stanch member of the democratic party.
