- He is buried in the old Googe Cemetery just due east of the Fairfax Cemetery. Each of his wives is buried on either side of him. He served in Company F, 3rd South Carolina Cavalry, CSA. He was a Mason. His wives were sisters.

Mr. M.P. Bassett Gone To His Reward
Confederate Veteran and a Man Highly Esteemed

Brunson, S.C., Oct. 22 – Died at his home near Brunson, Mr. M. P. Bassett, a Confederate veteran in the 80th year of his age. He enlisted at the beginning of the war in Nagood’s First Regiment of South Carolina Infantry, in which he served his time of enlistment. He then enlisted in Colcok’s Third Regiment of Cavalry and served in that command until the close of the war.
Mr. Bassett was a prosperous farmer of Hampton County and was a “landmark” in this community. He was buried with Masonic ceremonies in the presence of a large number of citizens of this and adjacent communities.
