James W. Bass
ROCKY MOUNT -- "J.W." was greeted by friends and family as he celebrated his 80th birthday on August 11, 2002. The day was filled with joy and laughter. Now it is again time to celebrate. Early on the morning of October 12, 2002, J.W. was called to meet his Lord and Savior. He left this world with the hands of his children on him in prayer.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 59 years, Dorothy May Hobbs Bass; father, Bollie Nick Bass; his mother, Mary Frances "Fannie" Sykes Bass; his brothers, Horace Clinton Bass, Clifton Earl Bass and brother-in-law, Harold Lee Purgason.
During his lifetime, J.W. worked and retired from Sprint, after 34 years of service. He often spoke about his experiences and friendships from those years with fondness and smiles. He was also a member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge @#230 as well as the Sudan Temple Shriners. He remained in contact with fellow veterans of WWII, 5th Armored Division. J.W. was proud to be an active member of the Englewood Methodist Church. The Aldergates Sunday School class had been a blessing with no end. The members were faithful with their visits and their tape ministry.
Besides being a loving and faithful husband, J.W.'s most treasured part of his life was his family. He is survived by a daughter, May Frances Bass Howell and husband, Dan; two sons, James William "Jim" Bass Jr. and wife, Judy and Larry David Bass and wife, Jackie. He had one granddaughter, Jennifer Bass Aycock and husband, Steve; three grandsons, James "Jim" William Bass III and his wife, Rebecca, Rodney Erwin Bass and wife Cindy, and Robert Earnest Bass and wife, Melissa.
The joy in his life always included his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Olen, Amber, Anna, Jordan and Alexis. He will be just missing the arrival of three more grandchildren, due to enter the world this month. "Family" for J.W. always included many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and very special in-laws.
The family will receive friends at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 3-5 p.m., and all other times at the family home.
Funeral service will be held at Englewood Methodist Church, Monday, October 14, 2002. Interment will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Gardens on Hwy. 43.
In lieu of flowers, J.W. requested contributions to the Sudan Temple Crippled Children's Fund., P.O. Drawer 490, New Bern, N.C. 28560.
