James F. Bass (Smithton)
James F. Bass, 80, died at his home in Smithton at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, a few minutes after he became ill.
Mr. Bass was born in Pettis County, July 26, 1886, the son of the late Joseph C. and Mary Susan Haley Bass. He lived all of his life in Pettis County, engaging in farming until he retired in 1955.
One of a family of three children, he was preceded in death by his only brother, William Bass, who died in 1924, and his only sister, Mrs. Elmer (Lula) Mitchell, who died in 1959.
He was married in Pettis County, Aug. 5, 1914 to Miss Myrtle R. Mitchell. They were the parents of eight children. One daughter died in infancy, and one son, Junior Franklin Bass, died in 1928, at the age of 7 years, and another son, Kenneth Paul Bass, died in 1958.
In 1964 Mr. and Mrs. Bass celebrated their golden wedding anniversary to their home in Smithton.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Bass; five sons, James William Bass, Smithton, Elmer Joseph Bass, Florence, Chester Albert Bass, Lenexa, Kan., James Lloyd Bass, Smithton, James Earl Bass, Lakewood, Colo. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held at the Ewing Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
The Rev. Harley Laflin, pastor of the Maplewood Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Smithton Cemetery.
The body is at the Ewing Funeral Home.
