Funeral Services Held For Pvt. Ray Bass at Beulah Thursday
Pvt. Ray Bass, of New York, formerly of Opp, died Saturday morning April 17, 1943 at a New York Hospital. His body arrived in Opp Wednesday morning at 9:00 o?clock and was carried to the home of his mother, Mrs. Ula Bass and brother Fletcher Bass.
Pvt. Bass was born in Covington County, March 7, 1920. He lived near Opp until he entered the United States Army January, 1940. He received training in the States for a number of months and was then sent overseas to do his part. He was taken sick and was sent back to new York for treatment. He accepted Christ on Friday evening before his death Saturday morning at 3:30 o?clock.
He was a pleasant person to know and be around. He always met you with a smile. His relatives and many friends will miss him very much. He made a host of friends wherever he went. His best friend, Sgt. Jack J. Grooms, of Fort Wadsworth, New York, followed his body to Beulah cemetery. Pvt. Bass? friends and relatives appreciated this very much.
He is survived by his mother Mrs. Lula bass, Opp; six sisters, Mrs. Martin Jackson and General Jackson, both of Samson, Mrs. Gladys Cogne, Washington, D.C., Mrs. Charley Bowden, Mrs. Silvester Boutwell, both of Opp, and Mrs. W.D. Sasser, Andalusia; ten brothers, Fletcher E. Bass, Grady and Tass Bass all of Opp, Malcom bass, Darlington, Fla., Quince Adams, Mobile, Angus Adams, Andalusia; Calvin Adams, DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; hayes Bass, U.S. Army, and J.T. Bass U.S. Navy.
Funeral service were held from the Beulah Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o?clock with Rev. Earle Trent, pastor of Opp Baptist Church, officiating, paying beautiful tribute to him. Music was furnished by J.O. McKinney, Miss Wise, S.A. Countryman, W.D. Rowland and Mrs. S. A. Countryman, pianist.
After brief funeral service interment was made in Beulah cemetery under a mound of beautiful flowers. Many friends and relatives attended the funeral.
Pallbearers were; His brothers Luther Bass, Grady Bass, Malcom Bass, Quince Adams, Angus Adams and Calvin Adams.
Flower girls were Misses Mavis Finlayson, Virginia Pitts, Cora Lee Gooden, Madene Gooden, Hilda Finlayson, Mildred Pitts and Margaret Wicker.
