Turners Falls - Laurel Grace (Taferner) Bassett, 83, of Turnpike Road, died Saturday (May 5, 2012) peacefully at home. She was born in Pelham, New York, on July 11, 1928, the daughter of Joseph A. and Grace (Curry) Taferner. Laurel was a graduate of the Academy at Mount St. Vincent's and continued her education at Marymount College in New York.She was a successful real estate agent in Franklin County and was employed at Greenfield Savings Bank as an appraiser for many years before her retirement.Laurel was a former communicant of St. John's and Blessed Sacrament churches and was a current communicant of Our Lady of Peace Church. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister.She loved the ocean and spending time with her husband Jack in Maine. Laurel enjoyed cooking, baking and her beautiful floral gardens. She was a New England Patriots fan. Laurel woke up every day mindful of her family and was grateful for her many blessings. She lived her life sharing those same blessings with others. She was known for her strong faith and giving spirit. She especially helped those in need through her church, her community and through her contributions to numerous charitable organizations.Among her survivors, she leaves her husband of 26 years, John ""Jack"" Bassett; a daughter, Gail Seamonds and her husband Perry of Milford, Connecticut; three sons, Gary LaMontagne and his wife Susan of Easthampton, Grant LaMontagne and his wife Judy of Orinda, California, and Greg LaMontagne and his wife Nancy of Stratford, Connecticut, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Heather-Jo Purcell of Niantic, Connecticut; two brothers, Joseph Taferner of Palm Garden, Florida, and Richard Taferner of Northfield, and several nieces and nephews. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Thursday (May 10, 2012) at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, with the Reverend Stanley J. Aksamit, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, in Turners Falls.
