CHARLESTON - Roy James ""Sam"" Bass, 85, of Charleston, SC departed this life to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on March 31, 2017 after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. His family wishes to express their gratitude for all the support and prayers given through this struggle on his behalf. Many thanks to Sweetgrass Court, LifeCare at the Elms, and Intrepid Hospice for his care the last few years. Born December 23, 1931 in Tyler, Texas, Sam was the son of the late Frank and Mary Bass. Sam began his career in the Navy on the USS Black, DD-666 destroyer, from which he would soon transfer to the nascent Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) program. There he became a ""plank holder"" on the submarine tender USS Hunley AS-31. He spent the rest of his naval career at various support locations including Dunoon, Scotland. Following his 20 years of service he continued in the FBM program as a missile engineer with Lockheed Martin. After 24 years he retired in 1994. In retirement Sam was active in the church, and he was a member of the Fleet Reserve and the Lowcountry Model A Club.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, Sam enjoyed fishing, woodworking, small craft projects, and acting in the Footlight Players. He also enjoyed driving and tinkering with his Model A. He was a quiet man, always quick to help anyone who asked him. Sam loved making memories for others.
Sam was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vivian, as well as his brother Ronald Bass and his sister, Mary Nell McCallie. He is survived by his children Suzanne (John) Whitsell of Keller, TX; Timothy (Carmen) Bass of El Paso, TX; JuliAnn (Norman) Garland of North Charleston, SC; Paul (Angela) Bass of Winona, TX; and Scott ( Kelly) Bass of Bonneau, SC; his twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, along with many dear friends who were loved as extended family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service at Grace Lutheran Church, Summerville on Friday, April 7 at 11AM. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the church following the Memorial Service.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 1600 Old Trolley Road, Summerville, SC 29485 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 2090 Executive Hall Road, Suite#130, Charleston, SC 29407. Fair Winds and Following Seas.
