  Notes	The Smithfield Herald, North Carolina, May 5, 1911 Met Her Death At The Well Sunday Afternoon Mrs. Amanda Bass, wife of Mr. John Bass, was killed by lightning while drawing water at her home in Bentonsville township Sunday afternoon. It occurred about five o?clock. While a thunderstorm was in progess Mrs. Bass went out to the well to draw some water using the old-fashion pole and well sweep, the pole in this instance being a chain. The bolt of electricity struck a tree near the well and is supposed to have jumped from this to the well chain, running down the chain to Mrs. Bass. The lightning tore one of her shoes off. Death was instantaneous. Mrs. Bass was between fifty and sixty years of age and was a good neighbor and a Christian wowman, having been a member of Mill Creeek church for many years. She leaves a husband and several children, besides a host of friends, to mounr their loss.
