Sudden Death Of A Pioneer
Douglas Bessette, another of the pioneers who came to Lawton shortly before the opening in 1901, and who is widely known throughout southwest Oklahoma, died at his cottage at Sheridan Lodge shortly before 3 o?clock Wednesday afternoon at the ripe old age of 71 years.
Besides his widow, deceased leaves four daughters and two sons in the immediate family: Mrs. C. H. Smith, Mrs. Tom Pekorney, Mrs. Opal Wyatt, all of Lawton; Mrs. C.E. Snell, Oklahoma City; E.W. Bessett of Corpus Christi and Gerald Bessette, of Lawton. Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive.
Funeral services will be held from the Ritter Funeral Home chapel Sunday afternoon at two o?clock with Rev. Harry Lee Virden, vicar of the Episcopal church, conducting the service. Burial will be made in Highland cemetery.
During the early days of Lawton ?Doug?, as he was known to his friends, worked as a meat cutter. For several years he operated the Lawton Produce Co. For the past twelve years he has engaged in no active business but has resided at this home near the headwater of the lake, fishing and spending much of his time outdoors. Death Wednesday followed a heart attack.
?Doug? was a very likeable character and was congenial and companionable. He cherished the companionship of his old-time friends, who will learn with sorrow of his passing and extend sympathy to bereaves relatives.
