Mary E. Bassett, Raleigh
Mary Elizabeth Peak Bassett, 71, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died January 28, 1998 in Rex Hospital in Raleigh after a long illness. She was a retired teacher, having taught in public school in Virginia, prior to her marriage. A former member of Ridge Road Baptist Church, a 4 year resident of Independence Village, a graduate and valedictorian of Gladys High School in Gladys, Virginia. A graduate of Madison College in Harrisonburg, Virginia with a B.S. in Education. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, member of the Women of the Church and the Bona Vista Garden Club, and numerous church groups and circles. Her late husband, Clement R. Bassett was the Commissioner of the State Department of Employment Security from 1961 to 1977. Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Scott (Mary) Hamilton of Charlotte, North Carolina and Mrs. Dean (Peggy) Williams of Raleigh, North Carolina; sisters, Margaret Hutcherson of Charlottesville, Virginia and Lucille Wardin of Nashville, Tennessee; brother-in-laws, Dr. Irving L. Hutcherson and Dr. Albert W. Wardin; brother, Nelson Peak of Long Island, Virginia, sister-in-law, Mildred Peak; two grandchildren, John and Gray Williams both of Raleigh, North Carolina. Services will be Sunday, February 1, 1998 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary with Dr. Douglas Heidt officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home.
