Man Charged With Murder In Shooting
A Ludlow St. man who turned himself in at police headquarters Sunday was charged with murder in connection with the shooting of a Sellect St. man. The victim reportedly died in Stamford Hospital Saturday afternoon, apparently of gunshot wounds in the chest and abdomen.
Police identified the suspect who they said turned himself in, as James E. Shepard, also known as ?Brother,? 27, of 99 Ludlow St.
Shepard came to headquarters at Bedford and Hoyt Sts. at 1:20 a.m. Sunday and surrendered to the office on duty at the desk, Ptl. Kenneth Mickelson.
The victim was identifed as Marvin C. Bass, 25, of 67 Sellect St.
Although few details of the incident were available, police said the shooting occurred apparently after an argument over money.
Police said they found Mr. Bass at his home address after an unidentified woman summoned them there at 3:44 p.m. Saturday.
According to police reports, Mr. Bass, who was conscious when police arrived, allegedly told Ptl. Eugene Passero that Shepard was his assailant.
A Stamford Hospital spokesman said that Mr. Bass died, apparently of the gundhot wounds at 5:25 p.m. Saturday.
Shepard reportedly told police that he gave the gun with which he allegedly shot Mr. Bass to a friend. Police said investigation turned up a black and white handled pistol at an apartment at 41 Hawthorne St. which might possibly have been the alleged murder weapon, but the gun had not been checked out early today.
Capt. of Detectives Thomas O?Connor would not divulge the identity of the occupant of the Hawthorne St. apartment.
Shepard is being held in Bridgeport correctional center for arraignment in First Circuit Court, probably today.
No bond was set.
Mr. Bass was born in Stamford, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Bass. He attended Rippowam High School and was formerly a drummer with the Aristocrats of Norwalk, a dance band.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Diane Smith Bass; a daughter, Dawn C. Bass, and a brother, Rodney Bass of Stamford.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Bethel AME Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., with the Rev. Elliott J. Mayfield officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the Downer Funeral Home, 54 West Main St., from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
