Saul Z. Bass, S&L Founder
Saul Z. Bass, 86, a Chicago optometrist turned banker, died Saturday at his Near North Side home after a long illness.
Mr. Bass, founder and first president of the former Unity Savings and Loan Association at Harlem and Irving in Norridge, practiced optometry in Logan Square from 1932 until 1955 when he began devoting more time to banking.
He founded Unity in 1959 and never went back to optometry.
In 1971, Unity became the state's first S&L to be publicly owned, as part of Bass Financial Corp., a holding company Mr. Bass chaired. Bass Financial also owned Park Forest Savings & Loan.
Unity was taken over by the Federal Savings & Loan Insurance Corp. in 1982 and merged with the former Talman Home Federal Savings.
Before founding the savings association, Mr. Bass was a director and key shareholder in West Irving State Park, a Northwest Side bank involved in controversy in the early 1950s.
Orville E. Hodge, the state auditor at the time, briefly closed the bank for questionable dealings with a prospective Texas buyer.
The bank's president was forced out, but Mr. Bass, who controlled shares slated for sale to the Texas buyer, remained on the board after the bank reopened.
Mr. Bass is survived by two sons, Mitchell and Howard; six grandchildren, and two sisters, Eze Kopel and Ida Bass.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Weinstein Brothers Chapel, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette. Burial will be in Memorial Park, Skokie.
