Edwin Merrell Bass
Edwin Merrell Bass, 86, of New Bern, died August 17, 2009, at Two Rivers Healthcare ? Trent Campus. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and he was a veteran of World War II. He was a mem-ber of Temple Baptist Church, Doric Masonic Lodge No. 568, New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, Road Runners and Chef Crew with the Sudan Temple and a member of New Bern Shrine Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Virginia Cutler Bass and his sister, Mattie Yount. He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Scott and husband Leon, Martha Brinson and hus-band Clem, all of New Bern, and Lynne Shirley and husband, Steve, of Beaufort, S.C.; five grand-children, Marie Scott and husband Michael Garrett, Blair and Brooke Brinson, Ginny Black and husband Gabe, Eddie Shirley and wife Angela, and Daphne McCracken; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan Landry, Lila Black, Addison Shirley and Connor McCracken. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2009, at Cotten Chapel with the Rev. Joe Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tonight, at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, Cindy Scott. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Eastern NC Chap-ter, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605-1351 or to Sudan Temple Crippled Chil-dren's Fund, P.O.
