- Jeanne Marie Smith, 1924-2006 (picture included)
Jeanne Marie Bassett Smith, age 81, died peacefully at her home after a courageous decade long battle with cancer. She was born on June 2, 1924, the only daughter of Ruth May Bassett and Harold Delorme Bassett. In 1941 she performed in the senior play "Scream of Terror", in which she delivered a blood curdling scream, attracting the attention of Raymond Nelson Smith. His attention has not faltered for 65 years. They graduated from West Carthage High School in June of 1942 and were married in Carthage, N.Y. on March 10, 1944. In the first 29 years of marriage they moved 31 times. Jean became and expert at making a home, anywhere, anytime.
Jeanne is survived by her husband of 62 years Raymond and her three children Tamia and her husband Robert Gastio, Harold and Alisa Smith and Eric and Robin Smith. She is a matriarch of the family which included 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents. She is dearly loved and greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 7 to 9 P.M. on Friday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, VT, 05602.
