Gene W. Bassett: Man, 75, dies in Granville house fire
A 75-year-old man died after a fire Monday night tore through a house in Granville.
State Police and firefighters were summoned to the home at 291 County Route 21 at 8:16 p.m. and found the building engulfed in flames.
Troopers said Gene W. Bassett was found dead inside the building after the fire was extinguished. He owned the house and was the only person there, troopers said.
Police said an investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Gene Bassett
Granville, NY Gene Bassett passed away on September 2 ,2024 as the result of a house fire.
Gene was born on July 12, 1949, in Granville, NY the son of Frederick and Mabel (Moyer) Bassett.
Except for a brief time, he spent with his brother Harold dabbling in the slate business, Gene's entire life revolved around animals. He was heavily involved in harness racing with a stint as a teamster. He was always open to taking in stray animals. His menagerie included goats, horses, chickens, ducks, rabbits and even exotic birds he boarded at different times. Gene was the kind soul that made sure the animals were fed before worrying about himself.
Gene was predeceased by his parents, and three brothers, Ernie, Harold and Art Moyer. He is survived by his dear friend and life companion Elena. Near and dear to his heart was his sister Sylvia Loomis and sister-in-law Nancy Bassett (Ernie) and niece April Bassett. Nancy was his guardian angel for many years making sure that he was ok and cared for. Gene is survived by his children Crystal Jurnak, Ashlee, Jill, Melissa Lutz, Keith, Rodney, Craig and Gregory Bassett.
Friends may call on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 4-7 PM at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St. Granville, NY. Burial will be on Friday, September 27 at 10 AM at Elmwood Cemetery in Middle Granville, NY.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested bags of animal food as Crystal has taken in all his beloved animals at her home, or gift cards to Tractor Supply or other animal supply sales source.
