Brian M. Bassett, 50, passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of September 27, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a family who loved him deeply.
Brian was born on December 3, 1975, at Travis Air Force Base in California to Linda and Gardner Bassett, originally of Brockton, Massachusetts. Because of his father?s active service in the United States Air Force, Brian spent his younger years living in many different places, including Bangor, Maine; San Antonio, Texas; Charleston, South Carolina; Lakenheath, England; and Rome, New York.
Throughout his childhood, Brian loved playing sports and traveling. Some of his fondest memories were the summers he spent back in Massachusetts surrounded by his brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He especially cherished the time he spent with his Auntie Ann Quinlan, who held a special place in his heart. Family was always an important part of Brian?s life, and those connections remained special to him throughout the years.
As a young adult, Brian discovered his love of music, especially the Grateful Dead. He traveled far and wide to attend their shows, collecting memories and stories along the way. His adventurous spirit and love of music were a reflection of the joy he found in experiencing life to the fullest.
Brian and his first wife, Coleen Barcomb, welcomed two sons, Zachary and Dylan Bassett, who became the center of Brian?s world. He was a devoted father who loved his boys more than anything and was incredibly proud of both of them. Brian cherished watching them grow and loved being a part of their lives. Some of his happiest moments were spent watching NASCAR with Zachary and celebrating Dylan?s graduation. He took great pride in the men his sons are becoming and treasured every moment he was able to spend with them. Being their dad was one of the greatest joys of Brian?s life, and the love he had for Zachary and Dylan was unmistakable to everyone who knew him.
Brian later met his second wife, Katie Schmidt, a??nd the two were married on September 15, 2023. Their relationship quickly grew into a deep friendship and partnership. Brian and Katie loved traveling together, hosting family dinners and holidays, and simply spending time with one another. They shared a bond built on laughter, friendship, family, and love.
Brian was one of the silliest, most lovable people you could ever meet. His laugh was infectious?big, unmistakable, and often loud enough to be heard across a crowd. Hearing Brian laugh could instantly make those around him smile. He had a way of bringing lightness and joy wherever he went, and his presence was something people could not help but notice.
Brian also had a passion for working on his Mustang and fixing cars. He had an incredible ability to figure things out and could seemingly find a way to fix just about anything. He was intelligent, curious, and endlessly determined when faced with a problem. If something was broken, Brian wanted to understand it, take it apart, and figure out how to make it work again.
Brian was preceded in death by grandparents, Doris ?Adele? and Jack ?Jake? Quinlan, and Helen and Gardner Bassett; his aunt, Phyllis Quinlan; his cousin, Rachel Quinlan; and his dear friend, Bob Barcomb.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Katie Schmidt-Bassett; his former wife and the mother of his sons, Coleen Barcomb; and his sons, Zachary and Dylan Bassett, all of Oneida, NY. He is also survived by his parents, Linda and Gardner Bassett; his brother, Andrew Bassett; and his nephews, Dean and Jake Bassett, all of Massachusetts. He leaves behind his beloved dog, Poe, who was a cherished companion.
He is also survived by his mother- and father-in-law, Helen and Ken McQuiltion of Connecticut; his mother- and father-in-law, Ken and Donna Temple of North Carolina; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members. He treasured his family deeply, and each of them held a special place in his heart.
Brian?s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his longtime friend, Don Andrews, as well as Courtney Kolwaite and Matthew Archer, for sharing in countless memories, and bringing so much laughter and friendship into his life over the years.
Brian will be remembered for so much: his infectious laugh, his silly sense of humor, his love of music, NASCAR, cars, traveling, family, and the people he loved. He especially enjoyed trying new things, from discovering fancy new restaurants and resorts to experiencing all the amenities they had to offer. He loved making memories through travel and sharing new experiences with the people he loved. He leaves behind countless memories that will continue to bring laughter, love, and comfort to those fortunate enough to have known him.
Brian is now reunited with God and with his beloved pets, Sid, Gussy, and Nina, as well as his best friend, Bob Barcomb.
Though his time here was far too short, Brian left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of the people who loved him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held 11AM, Saturday, October 3, 2026 from St. Joseph?s Church, with the Very Reverend James Koury, officiating. Friends may call at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida, on Friday, October 2, 2026 from 4-7PM.
