      1952 ? 2018

Alonzo Earl Bass, son of Henry and Dorothy Belch Bass, was born November 26, 1952 in Cayce, SC. After a long, valiant battle with cancer, Earl passed away in Miami on February 4, 2018. Earl is survived by his wife, Hedy McDonald-Bass; his mother, Dorothy; son, Landon; daughters, Kayla Bass (Paul) and Olivia; brothers, Leslie and Larry; sisters, Brenda Hook (Davis) and Kathy Hamby (Johnny); 2 grandchildren, Isabella and Pierce; and many loving nieces and nephews. Earl graduated from Airport High School where he was voted by the area coaches as The Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1971, excelling in basketball, football, and baseball. Earl attended the University of South Carolina on a baseball scholarship recruited by Coach Bobby Richardson and Johnny Hunton. In the list of top 20 USC athletes of the century, Earl is listed as number 4. Some of his pitching records while at USC still stand: shutouts (10), earned run average (1.34) and strikeouts (392). He compiled a 34-3 record. Earl twice earned All American honors and pitched in the finals of the 1975 College World Series, finishing 17-1 as the runner-up team. The year before (1974) he had a 12-1 record. Over two seasons, he won 23 consecutive decisions. Drafted in the second round by the St. Louis Cardinals organization, Earl reached AAA level before an arm injury ended his career. Earl was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and was selected as a SEC Legend in 2017. He was honored in May, 2017, at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Alabama at the SEC College Baseball Tournament. Earl has made his home in Palm Beach, Florida for many years where he owned a restaurant in near-by Manalapan. He loved his family dearly and his many friends who remember the Carolina Baseball Team of 1974-75. A memorial service will be held at Thompson's Funeral Home, 4720 Augusta Rd (Hwy 1), Lexington, SC on Saturday, February 10th at 2 o'clock with visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS.org) or the charity of your choice.
