- According to the 1850 census, Charles M. Bassett was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania about 1819. He died 29 Jan 1873 in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, aged 53 years and 29 days from enysipelas. He married Martha Lowery (MR) on 13 Aug 1845 in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. She was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania about 1826. Martha died 16 Jul 1907. Charles is buried in the East Akron Cemetery. His named is also inscribed on the marble tablet located in the memorial chapel erected by the GAR in the Glendale cemetery in Akron, Summit County, Ohio.
In two pictures provided by Laura Gless, we have a picture listed as mother of W.C. Bassett taken in Akron, Ohio. We also have a picture of a Civil War Soldier more than likely of Charles Bassett.
Jack Ott found a record for Charles Bassett who enlisted 10 Sep 1861 with the rank of Steward-hospl in Ohio, aged 41 years, which is probably our Charles.
Charles M. Bassett enlisted 25 Aug 1864 at the age of 44 years in Co. K 180th Infantry Regiment of Ohio. He was mustered out at Columbus, Ohio on 7 Jul 1865. The following is taken from the "Declaration for Original Pension of a Widow - Child or Children under Sixteen" filed by Martha M. Bassett of Summit County, Ohio on 17 Aug 1881. Witnesses were Isabelle Shutt and Lucretia Swizler. Martha is listed as age 54 in this declaration.
Charles M. Bassett died 29 Jan 1873 from disease contracted in the U.S. Service. He was married to Martha Bassett 13 Aug 1845 in Beaver Co., Pa by Esquire Hamilton. Their children who were under sixteen years at the time of their father's death were: Isabelle, born 10 Oct 1860, Charles, born 26 Apr 1863, Esther, born 11 Feb 1876, died Feb 1882, Milton, born 4 Jul 1869.
Louisa Finch (36 years old) of Middlebury, Summit County, Ohio, filed a "General Affidavit" 9 Dec 1886 pertaining to the Widow's Pension of Martha M. Bassett. She stated that she was present at the birth of Isabelle and Charles Bassett, that at the time of the births she was living with and working for the claiment, taking care of babies and mother during said sickness and that the children are still living.
Louisa Finch file another Affidavit 3 Aug 1888. She states that she saw Charles M. Bassett soon after his discharge from the military in 1865 and that he was sick and suffering and hardly able to walk, that he had ensipelas and dropsey and that he never fully recovered, he was not able to do buy very little and only light manual labor.
Other persons who filed Affidavit on behalf of Martha M. Bassett were: James Viall, age 59, 8 Dec 1886, of Akron, Ohio states that he has known Charles M. Bassett since 1832.
John Corley, age 45, 23 Feb 1886, of Akron, Ohio states that he has resided as neighbor to claiment from April 1866 to the present time.
Walter R. Upham, 17 Apr 1883, of Middleburg, Summit, Ohio, states that he has known Charles and Martha Bassett for over 35 years.
From IGI records, we have a Louise Bassett who married John E. Finch on 3 Oct 1880 in Summit County, Ohio. She is most likely the Louisa Finch also listed in the pension papers. She has not yet been identified.
(MR - Marriage record of daughter Sarah J. Olin and Restore Douglass lists parents of Sarah J. Bassett as Charles Bassett and Martha Lowery.
