Bassett Long Residence In Lichfield The death occurred at his residence in Lombard Street, Lichfield, on Monday, of Mr. William Bassett, who for the past 26 years has been School Attendance Officer for Lichfield, whilst prior to his last illness had also acted as market toll collector. Mr. Bassett was born at Bristol on October 29th, 1855, and at the age of four his father died. He and his mother then went to reside at Hill Ridware, where he commenced to go to school. At the age of 15 he was apprenticed to a Rugeley baker and provision merchant, Mr. A. Whitworth, but after two years came to Lichfield, where he entered the service of Mr. J.C. Richardson, Senior, remaining there seven years. He afterwards worked for Mr. Humphreys, and in 1887 took up a spare time agency for the Royal Liver Friendly Society. He wa appointed School Attendance Officer and market toll collector in the year 1898, and has discharged these duties in a most efficient manner for a period of 26 years. He was well known as a Wesleyan Church worker and had been a Sunday school teacher all the time he had been in the city. Deceased leaves a widow, one son and four daughters to mourn his loss. The funeral took place at the Wesleyan Church, Lichfield, yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, the Reverend L. O. Brooker conducting the service.
