Dr. Robert L. Bass

Dr. Robert L. Bass, passed from this life into the arms of his heavenly Father at the age of 84 on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at his home surrounded by family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Perkins. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Perkins, OK, with Pastor Martin Voelker officiating.
Robert was born on June 3, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska to Effie (Martin) and Bert Bass. He attended school in Omaha and graduated from Omaha North High at the age of 16. He was active in ROTC and was honorably discharged from the National Guard with the rank of Corporal. Robert attended Omaha University and graduated with a Bachelor?s degree in 3 years. He furthered his education at the University of Nebraska Medical School, graduating in 1956, finishing his residency in surgery in 1958. He was eventually certified in Family Practice.
Robert married his high school sweetheart on August 30, 1953 at the Baptist Church in Omaha, NE. They had six loving children together: Valerie, Carole, Craig & Kent (twins), Robert J. and Dara. He was a dedicated husband and father who enjoyed traveling with his family. He worked hard and he played hard. When Robert was away from work, you could find him piloting his plane or boat with his wife by his side. He also enjoyed a day playing golf with friends and family. He loved to sing in the church choirs where they were members.
Robert was also very active in civic organizations in the communities in which they lived as well as his professional career. He opened his family practice in Genoa, NE and practiced for 22 years before teaching at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in their Family Practice program for 19 years, some of which involved administration and he eventually chaired the Family Practice Residency program. He also sponsored the first Christian Medical Society at UNO and authored a textbook on medical office procedures. After retiring in Fairfield Bay, AR, Robert served on the Clinton Community Hospital Board. They moved to Arlington, Texas in 2006 where Robert served as a hospital volunteer, before he and Beverly moved to Perkins, OK in 2014.
Dr. Robert Bass was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Effie Bass; one brother, Carl Bass and one granddaughter, Sheryl Vadney.
Robert is survived by his wife, Beverly Bass of Perkins, OK; six children: Valerie Engel of Perkins, Carole Vadney of Delanson, NY, Craig Bass of Omaha, NE, Kent Bass of Arlington, TX, Rob Bass of Coeur d?Alene, and Dara Kustka of Arlington, TX. Robert is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Robert Bass, M.D., a longtime UNMC educator and administrator, died on Aug. 4 at the age of 84.
Colleagues say Dr. Bass made a huge impact on the UNMC Department of Family Medicine, where he served as the department chairman from 1982-1989.
Dr. Bass oversaw the development of the community-based rotation for family medicine residents. In all, he worked at UNMC for 19 years.
?Dr. Bass was a strong leader during his tenure as chair of family medicine at UNMC,? said current UNMC Department of Family Medicine Chair Michael Sitorius, M.D.
?In his quiet, positive way he played a critical role in helping the UNMC Department of Family Medicine transition into its current role on the UNMC campus. His recruitment, support and mentoring of experienced faculty and commitment to learners was an invaluable strength.?
Dr. Bass was a 1956 graduate of UNMC and served the community of Genoa, Neb., as a family physician for 22 years before serving as chairman.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly and six children, Valerie (Randy) Engel, Carole (Ed) Vadney, Craig (Pam), Kent (Linda), Robert J.(Janell), and Dara (Scott) Kustka, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
