      Robert Bass

Robert Bass, 76, passed away quietly at his home on Thursday, May 13, 2004. Bob was born on July 7, 1927, in Warrensberg, Missouri to Gus and Roberta Bass. He is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth Bass. He was a graduate of Central Missouri State College and received his Masters Degree in physics from the University of Missouri. Bob served in the Signal Corps, U.S. Army in the early 1950's, being assigned to the Bureau of Standards to monitor radiation measurements at the Nevada test site. Upon discharge from the army, he worked for Sandia Corporation, as a nuclear safety officer and later as a project scientist on field measurements. While at Sandia for 35 years of employment, he co-authored a major work on ground shock measurement at the Nevada test site. This work is a standard reference for stress, motion, and acceleration in test site geologies. He was involved in calculational work supporting a variety of experiments at the Nevada test site. After his retirement from Sandia, he performed consulting work, including technical support for the United States at the SALT treaty negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland. He had many close personal and professional friends and will be greatly missed by them. Bob was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed hiking trails in the Sandia Mountains and traveling. He was a member of Sandia Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to thank Earlastine Garrett, Vernida McKinney, and April Sommerville for their loving care. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery, with The Rev. Dewey Johnson officiating.
