Minnie Mattingley
Minnie Mattingly, 75, Liberal, Missouri, died at 12:05 a.m. Sunday at Mt. Carmel Hospital, where she had been a patient several times in the past few years. She was born February 17, 1896, at Bolivar, Missouri, and moved to Liberal in 1898, residing in the Liberal-Mulberry area the rest of her life. In October 1911, she married William Riley. He died in May, 1912. On September 21, 1913, she married Jack Sherron, who died July 4, 1935. She then married Luther Mattingly December 25, 1947. He died May 2, 1960. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Walter (Willie) Essex, Liberal; two sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Clark, Greenfield, Missouri, and Mrs. Howard Durham, Liberal; one brother, Clyde Bass, Lawrence; five step-daughters, Mrs. Elsie Ross, Lamar; Mrs. Vola Lowrey, Coffeyville; Mrs. Glen Murphy, Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Ray Tucker, Kansas City, Kansas; and Mrs. Bertha Hull, of Oklahoma; two step-sons, Jesse Sherron, and Harold Mattingly, Kansas City, Missouri; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Liberal Christian Church with Reverend Richard Talbott officiating. Burial will be in Liberal City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Buford Harkins, Ross Ward, Joe Curless, Joe Hedges, Fred Shaw and John Bowling. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight at Berkey Chapel in Mulberry.

Charivari Fun Ends Up In Wild Shooting Spree
The fun and games at a charivari for a Liberal couple nearly ended in tragedy December 29, 1947. Liberal's Main Street was crowded with people ready to give Luther Mattingly and his bride a proper beginning to married life. One of the crowd, the bride's grandson, Don Sherron, had brought along a shotgun to add to the festive atmosphere. As the crowd was headed toward the restaurant Mattingly owned, the shotgun accidentally went off. The surprised boy then accidentally jammed the gun and the crowd was sprayed with round after round of buckshot from the automatic pump gun. No one was seriously injured, but eight people required medical attention from Dr. Kneeland. According to the published report, the doctor spent most of the evening digging buckshot out of the victims. Among the injured were Miss Jean McClendon, a Barton City schoolteacher, who was hit in the forehead and the knee; Lenore Hamm, hit in the knee and the stomach; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Blackman and their daughter, Judy, were hit in the legs; and Oliver Webb was hit in the thumb.
