Monroe Bass

STARKS ? Funeral services for Monroe " Joe " Bass, 81, will be at 10 a.m. today, June 20, in Calvary Apostolic Church in Starks. The Rev. Paul Nugent will officiate. Burial will be in Hyatt Cemetery in Fields under the direction of Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy. Visitation continues today in the church.
Mr. Bass died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in a Lake Charles hospital.
He was a native of the Green Island Community. He was born Jan. 1, 1922, in Lunita. He graduated from Starks High School as salutatorian in 1942. He married the former Dora Stanley of Green Island. He was Pentecostal. He was a charter member of the Starks Historical Society and VFW Post 3802. He served honor-ably in the Navy in the Pacific Theater Amphibious branch in World War II. He served on various civic boards. He worked as a machinist and was employed by Livingston Shipyard in Orange, Texas. He loved to read Shakespeare.
Earthly treasures include three daughters, Linda and husband Emmitt Clark of DeQuincy, Molly and husband John Poe of Singer, and Brenda Jo Bass of Newton, Texas; two grandsons, Justin and wife Kelly Clark of Lake Charles and John Madison Poe IV of Singer; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Madeline Clark of Lake Charles; one special nephew, Billy Roy Thompson of Starks; three brothers, Fred McLeod of Center, Texas, Glen McLeod of Beaumont, Texas, and Clifford Bass of Houston; one sister, Faye Bass Odom of Kirbyville, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, friends and neighbors.
