Mary Jane Parks Bass
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jane Parks Bass, age 57, of Speedwell, who died Wednesday in a Wytheville hospital were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Speedwell Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Officiating at the funeral was the Rev. Frank Lewis, the Rev. Raymond Farmer, a friend of many years and also the Rev. Glenn Byrd. The deceased had been in ill health for the past few months, and critically ill for several weeks.
Mrs. Bass had been an active member of the church for many years. She was an active leader in the Speedwell Ladies Aid Society. Mrs. Bass was keenly interested in the school and activities of the community. The huge crowd in attendance at the final rites was a testimony to the high esteem in which she was held. Her husband has been an employee of the Wythe County School Board in various capacities for over a quarter of a century. Surviving are her husband, Walter Rudy Bass, Speedwell; Four sons, W. R. Bass, Jr. and Joseph L. Bass, Speedwell; Thomas M. Bass, Wytheville; and James R. Bass, Huntington, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Ocie Mann, Rural Retreat; Mrs. Walter Harthausen, Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Steven D. Parks, York, Pa.; Bane Parks, Andrew Parks, Rural Retreat. Also surviving are nine grandchildren. Grubb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
