Evert J. Bassett, Croswell (Picture included)
Evert James Bassett, age 90, passed away May 13, 2014.
He was born on April 11, 1924 to Elmer and Grace Bassett. He was born a twin with Evelyn Jane "Toby" and joined a family of 12 children. Evert and Toby celebrated their 90th birthday this year. He was a talented welder and was co-owner of Bassett Welding Works with his brother Elmer (Al) and was retired for 25 years. He married Sally McFarlane on June 8, 1990. They enjoyed their retirement by spending the winters at their home in Naples, Florida and summers at their home in Croswell. He loved to ride motorcycles and was also a musician that played the guitar and sang in bands at the old favorite night life establishments around the Port Huron area. He also played and sang at their winter home for many of the social events. He attended St. Denis Catholic Church in Lexington.
He is survived by his wife Sally and his children Judi (Jerry) Dostal, James (Ann) Bassett and Jeanne (Daniel) Dawson-Collins. He is also survived by his twin sister Toby and Sally's children Patrick McFarlane and Lesli (Kevin) McCarthy. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Bonnie Joy, his parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 2-6 P.M. on Sunday at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Lexington, and from 9:30-10:30 A.M. on Monday. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday at Ave Maria Parish-St. Denis Catholic Church in Lexington. Fr. Donald J. Eppenbrock will officiate. Interment will follow in the Christian Memorial Cemetery in Peck.
