      Obituary
      Late Mr. R.A. Gibson
The death took place on April 2 of Mr. R.A. Gibson, who made a name for himself in the farming world of the Illawarra district by winning the prize for the best all-round farm on the South Coast under 100 acres. He thus repeated the distinction gained by his father, the late Mr. Edward Gibson, who won the prize offered in 1899 for the best model farm in the State.
The late Mr. R.A. Gibson was a son of the late Mr. Edward Gibson who was born in Tyrone, Ireland, and came direct to the Illsarra district, where he settled. When referring to this death the “Illawarra mercury,” of October 26, 1899, stated: “The admirable manner in which his property was kept made it a pleasure to visit it at any time. Mr. Gibson for many years took an active part in public affairs, serving several terms as an alderman of Central Illawarra Council and was a prominent member of the Woollongong Agricultural Society.”
It may be said of Mr. R.A. Gibson that he followed in the footsteps of his father in farming his property, “Redhall,” Fig Tree, where he remained for 47 years. In 1902 when he won the prize with his farm, the judge referred in very complimentary terms to the manner in which it was kept.
The late Mr. R.A Gibson was held in very high esteem by all who knew him for his neighbourly qualities. His word was his bond, and he was honourable in all his dealings.
He was a garden lover and took a great interest in anything pertaing to the land, particularly agricultural shows.
In 1938 the late Mr. Gibson leased the farm to Cr. Lindsay-Maynes, and retired, to live in a new cottage he had erected at Rowland Avenue, Woolongong.
The late Mr. R.A. Gibson was born at “Sunnybank”, Dapto in 1875, and was married in 1902 at St. Michael’s Church, Woolongong, to Miss Eliza Jane Bassett, of Adelong, who predeceased him by fourteen years. The issue of the marriage was five daughters and three sons: Ivy (Mrs. Otton), Allan, Roy, Harold; Evelyn (Mrs. Ford), Joyce, Lottie and Olive.
One brother survives him, Mr. Edward Gibson, of Rawlinson Avenue, Wollongong. Sisters surviving, Mrs. H. Keys (Bexley), Mrs. John Clarkes (Tenterfield), Mrs. R. Johnston (Drrigo). Two brothers and one sister predeceased him.
The remains were interred in the Wollongong Cemetery. A service was held at the All Saints’ Church, Fig Tree, and at the graveside. The officiating clergymen were: The Rev. Goodwin (Port Kembla-Berkely-Fig Tree Parish), Rev. A.J. Dyer (West Wolloongong) and Rev. Craven-Sands (Mt. Kembla).
The funeral cortege was a representative one. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.
