Raymond ?Ray? Bass

Raymond ?Ray? James Bass, 77, of rural Richland County, died Monday, August 10, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on February 5, 1949, the son of Ransom and Esther (Rood) Bass. Ray graduated from Kickapoo High School in 1968. He joined the US Army and served his country from May 1969 until May 1971.
Ray married his high school sweetheart, Susan Cutler, on June 12, 1971, at the West Lima Church of Christ. In 1975, Ray and Susan found their forever home on Spangler Ridge, where they made many lasting memories. Together, they built a life filled with family, friendship, and strong connections with their neighbors.
Ray worked at Richland Foundry for 42 years before retiring. He was a proud member of the Viola American Legion Post 447.
Ray was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, whether it was helping with farm work, cutting wood, or simply doing whatever needed to be done. He never hesitated to help others and was known for his kindness and generosity.
He was a talented and creative man who enjoyed making tin can flowers, woodworking, and knife making. He also enjoyed working on word search puzzles and spending time with his two cats, Rascal and Tinkerbell.
Above all, Ray loved his family. He cherished the time spent with those closest to him and will be remembered for his kind heart, willingness to help others, and the love he had for his family and community.
Ray is survived by his wife of 55 years Susan; daughter: Tina Rae (Bass) Moore of OK; two sons: Ricky Bass of Viola, Steven (Kelly) Bass of Viola; grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother, two sisters, many brothers and sisters- in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his p??arents, parents-in-law, two brothers, five sisters, and great grandson.
A celebration of life will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Pratt Memorial Chapel with military honors to be provided by the Viola American Legion Post 447. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Pratt Memorial Chapel from 4:00 PM until the time of service at 6:00 PM. Memorials in Ray?s name can be directed to the Viola Fire Dept., Kickapoo Rescue Squad, or Viola American Legion Post 447.
