- When a young man, Bennett Ebenezer Bassett attended a select school in Farmer Village taught by P.C. Headley, on the corner of Seneca Street and West Avenue. Here he met Matilda Wheeler, also a pupil. Later he taught school at Covert, New York, and she was one of his pupils there, and he boarded at her home. Their acquaintance ripened into love and they were married. The Bassetts and Wheelers both migrated to Seneca County about the same time.
The year 1850 saw the breaking up of the farm home of Lemuel and Julia Bassett, and the beginning for themselves of the sons Bennett and Jared. The time came when the two brothers must decide on their farms. The roadway divided their father's farm into nearly equal parts; the upper tract was the better land, but there was no good house on it. Which one was to have the upper farm and which the lower? They settled the matter by "drawing cuts", and the lower farm fell to Bennett. Jared bought only 70 acres on the start, paying $50 per acre.
Bennett's farm contained 101 acres, 3 roods and 23 rods of land, and a stipulation in his deed contained these words: "The said party of the second part is to have the privilege of conducting the water from the spring on lot No. 40 in the same manner as now conducted by the party of the first part".
This clause referred to a system of running water then in use by which water ran in the kitchen of the old house by means of a lead pipe leading from a spring on the south side of the upper farm near the Severn woods.
Bennett continued to use the water for several years, when it was abandoned. A few years after purchasing the farm, he sold to Hamilton Mundy a strip of woodland on the eastern side containing about fourteen and one-half acres.
Jared Beardsley Bassett (brother of Bennett Bassett) was married to Mary Wheeler whose father was Nathan Beech Wheeler.
Bennett Basset (brother of Jared Beardsley Bassett) was married to Matilda Wheeler whose father was Lyman Wheeler.
Nathan Beech Wheeler and Lyman Wheeler were brothers.
