Mary Elizabeth Bass

Mary Elizabeth (Leek) Bass, 89, of Loxahatchee, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. Mary was born on May 30, 1936, to James Marshall and Nannie Mae Leek in Springfield, Tennessee. She grew up on a 100-acre farm, milking cows and helping at harvest time. Mary was a straight A honor student and she played varsity basketball. After graduating from Springfield Highschool in 1954, she moved to Marietta, Georgia for college, where she met a handsome seminary student named John. In 1956, Mary wed John Benton Bass in Springfield, Tennessee. They went on to have 4 sons, John Jr., James, Wesley and Paul. During their life together, they planted two churches and pastored six others. Besides helping with the churches and raising four boys, Mary was a schoolteacher and clerical worker. She loved to teach, share the gospel and minister through hospitality to those around her. In retirement she spent her time spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved walks, meals with friends and swinging on the front porch with her loved ones. Mary was predeceased by her parents and her siblings James Leek, Jewel Jakes, Nellie Simpkins, Martha Ralph, her husband, John Bass and daughter-in-law Veronica Bass. She is survived by sons, John Bass Jr., James (Kimberly) Bass, Wesley Bass and Paul (Kathleen) Bass. Grandchildren, James (Shannon) Bass Jr., Amie (Riley) O?Neal, William (Emily) Bass, Evelyn Bass, Joelle Bass, Mollie Bass, Teegan Bass and Ketzia Bass. Great grandchildren, Zoey Bass, Mariella O?Neal, Elizabeth O?Neal, Corbin O?Neal, Vera Bass and Opal Bass. Services will be held 1:15pm at Kersey Funeral Home 108 Lake Stella Drive, Auburndale, Florida on Friday, March 20, 2026, visitation will be held before from 1-1:15pm at the funeral home. Following there will be a graveside service at Oak Hill Burial Park, 4620 US HWY 98 South Lakeland, Florida at 2:45 pm.
