Death Of Mr. George W. Bassett, J.P.
We regret to announce the death of an old and respected citizen, Mr. George William Bassett, J.P, who passed away at his residence, Sunville House, Thomondgate, on yesterday at the ripe age of 82 years. The deceased gentleman was for a long span of years a prominent and popular figure in municipal life. A native of the Castle Ward, in which his late residence is situate, he represented that constituency for many years in the old Corporation, and also at the Poor Law Board, in both of which his excellent business capacity and judgement had due weight, while his affable and kindly nature won for him the respected esteem of all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was also a Fishery Conservator, and ex-officio member of the Nenagh Board of Guardians, a Grand Juror of the County Tipperary, where he possessed considerable property and he held the Commission of the Peace for Tipperary and Limerick. He frequently attended Newport Petty Sessions, and while his health permitted was most regular occupant of the city bench. For the past few years, however, Mr. Bassett had retired into private life. It may be added that he was the oldest surviving member of the Masonic body in Limerick, having been Worshipful Master of Lodge 73 so far back as 1855. In church matters he took an active interest, and had been a member of the Select Vestry of St. Mary’s Cathedral down to 1894, since which time he has been in delicate health. The funeral will for St. Munchin’s Church on Thursday morning at ten o’clock.
