Robert Bassett, Was Partner In PR Firm
Robert M. Bassett, a retired public relations consultant, died Wednesday (April 27, 1994) at the Jewish Center for the Aged in Town and Country after suffering from Alzheimer?s disease. He was 73. Mr. Bassett, of Clayton, was a partner for 20 years in the public relations firm of Paul Morris and Associated. He managed public relations for businesses, charities and political campaigns. He retired in 1979. In the 1950s, he was the first in-house public relations counsel for the old Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney, a department store.
An avid fisherman, he helped to found ?Fly Fisherman? magazine in 1971 and served as its executive publisher for several years. In the 1960s, he was co-author with Fred Karches of ?All in a Day?s Work,? a column on business advice in the Post-Dispatch.
He served for several years on the board of the First United Unitarian Church of St. Louis, where he was a member since the early 1960s.
Mr. Bassett earned a bachelor?s degree from Washington University. He served in the Navy in World War II. No funeral service will be held. The body was donated to the Washington University School of Medicine.
Among the survivors are his wife, Shirley Martin Bassett of Clayton; a son, Michael Bassett of St. Louis; and a daughter Sarah Martin Bassett of Boulder, Colo.
