- 3B32365243. Charles Chester Bassett Jr., son of Charles Chester and Fannie (Rice) Bassett, was born 22 Dec 1896. He married (1) Rinetta Heath. He married (2) Julia Learnard Hebard, of Philadelphia, a graduate of Harvard, on 13 Jul 1926 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were divorced about 1930. She married (2) John Burt Corning in the early 1930's and they settled in Arundel, Maine. He married (3) Marian Shaw on 24 Aug 1932.
He served in World War I. He was an employee of American Enka Company in North Carolina.
Charles Bassett Biography
Charles Chester Bassett, Jr., was born in Washington, DC on 22 December 1896, the son of Major Charles Bassett, a Civil Engineer, and Mrs. Bassett. He attended Harvard University, Class of 1915-1917, spending 2 years in a languages curriculum. While at Harvard he was a member of the varsity track team.
Bassett left Harvard University to join the Lafayette Flying Corps. He sailed for France on 2 June 1917 and enlisted in the Service Aeronautique on 17 June. He attended the aviation schools at Avord, Pau, Cazeuax, and the G.D.E., training on the Nieuport.
Corporal Bassett was released from French aviation to accept an appointment as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps at Paris on 4 January 1918. On 1 February 1918 at Moutchick he was made Naval Aviator (HTA) No. 1316. From 14 February to 3 September 1918 he flew hydro aircraft, serving at Dunkirk, Clermont, and with the Northern Bombing Group at St. Inglevert. While on detached service with RAF Squadron 218, he flew day bombing missions against Ostend, Zeebrugge, and Bruges. Bassett was awarded the U.S. Navy Cross. His citation is as follows:
"For distinguished and heroic service as an aviator of land planes attached to the Northern Bombing Group in active operations co-operating with the Allied Armies on the Belgian front during September, October and November, 1918, bombing enemy bases, aerodromes, submarine bases,
ammunition dumps, railroad junctions."
On 6 November 1918 Bassett returned to the U.S. as flight instructor at Miami. He was discharged as a Lieutenant (JG) on 4 March 1919. He re-entered in Class 6 as Ensign and was honorably discharged on 13 May 1928 as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force.
Following his war service Bassett worked for Burlington Mills then became a vice-president for Hartford Fiber Co., a division of the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. He married Rinetta Heath, then Julia Hebard, and on 24 August 1932 he married Marian Shaw. From this union a son and daughter were born. During World War Two Bassett served as a Major in the U.S. 8th Air Force in England. He died in a Greensboro, North Carolina nursing home on 22 March 1978 age 81.

Charles Chester Bassett Jr., 81, of 1161 N. Elm St. died Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greenhill Cemetery with Dr. Charles Reckard officiating. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
A native of Washington, he moved to Greensboro from New York City in 1866. He was a retired vice-president of Hartford Rayon Co., a division of Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co., and was widely known in the textile field in the United States and Europe.
A 1919 graduate of Harvard University, he had enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in 1917 and became a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille Flying Corps. He was released from the French Army to accept appointment as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1918 and served with the Royal Air Force Squadron 218. He was awarded the Navy Cross for distinguished service on the Belgian Front.
In World War II he served as a major in the U.S. Army 8th Air Force in England. He was a member of the Harvard Club and the Union League Club of New York City.
Surviving are wife, Mrs. Marian Shaw Bassett; daughter, Miss Brooke Bassett of Clemmons; son, Charles C. Bassett III of Kennebunkport, Me.
The family will be at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. today.

The American Enka Corporation has elected two new vice presidents and other executives.
C. Chester Bassett Jr., who has been general sales manager, has been elected vice president for sales. Dr. John L. Bitter, formerly vice president for research and development, has been named vice president for marketing, a newly created division.
Dr. Frits Prakke, who has been technical assistant to the president, has been elected vice president for manufacturing. He succeeds Martin Wadewitz, named technical vice president and head of a newly combined research and engineering division. Robert B. Armstrong, has been
named assistant vice president for manufacturing and will transfer to Enka, N.C., from New York. Carl R. Dolmetsch has been appointed assistant to the president and will continue as manager of business development.
