(December 13, 1917 – May 2009)
Frank A. Bessette, age 91, of Hatley, died Thursday May 28, 2009 at Saint Clare’s Hospital, Weston. He was born on December 13, 1917 in the township of Elderon, the son of the late Melvin and Edna (Handschke) Bessette. On September 29, 1936 he was united in marriage to Alice M. Schofield in Birnamwood. She preceded him in death on December 28, 1989. He then married Betty R. (Burmeister) Roth on October 12, 1991 at St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2006. Frank and his wife Alice owned and operated a dairy farm, feed mill and milk routes. Frank also fixed machinery and televisions, plowed roads, did custom combining and silo filling and sold and installed milking machinery. He was also a bee keeper for a time. Frank was a member of St. Florian Catholic Church and served on the Elderon town board for many years. Frank was a very busy man but always had time for his children. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time at their cottage in Michigan. In his later years, a visit from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren was the highlight of his day. He loved to watch the hummingbirds out the living room window from his chair and on Sunday it was always the Jeff Heinz Polka Jamboree. Every meal he ate had to have a slice of homemade bread and honey with it. He is survived by seven children; Floyd Bessette, Florence (Kenny) Klabunde, Barbara Feehrer, Gary (Linda Nuxoll) Bessette, Patricia (Mark Slagowski) Schertz, Daniel Bessette, Cynthia (Henry) Palma and Bradley Bessette; 33 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a special step-grandson, Michael. In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Carmen Pingel, one son, Ronald Bessette, two grandsons, Kevin Bessette and Arthur Schertz and one granddaughter, Mary Keck. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Saturday, May 30 2009 at St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley. Rev. Donald Berg will officiate. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, town of Norrie. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of services at the church.
