Jos. B. Bass Dies, Aged 80
Well Known Farmer and Carpenter of Dry Hill Road
Joseph B. Bass died at 4 Sunday afternoon at his farm home in the town of Watertown on the Dry Hill road, following a long illness, aged 80 years. He suffered a serious stroke about ten years ago, and had been practically blind since that time. Lately he experienced two or three light shocks. His condition had been critical for some time, and the death was not unexpected. he had been unable to do much work since his first shock ten years ago.
He was born in the town of Heath, Mass., April 15, 1836, son of the late Joel M. and Jerusha Shippe Bass, both natives of Catamount Hill, Mass. He came to this city in 1859 and spent about five years learning the carpenter trade. In 1862 he bought the farm and farm home on Dry Hill and soon after moved there, where he had since resided. Jan. 31, 1864, he married Miss Hannah A. Simmons, who died in 1878. In 1882 he married Miss Alvira of Gouverneur, St. Lawrence county, until, her marriage. While Mr. Bass worked the farm to some extent, he was more interested in carpentry, and built and helped build many farm homes in this section. he also worked on many of the buildings in this city.
He was a member of Redman lodge, F.& A.M. Besides his widow, he leaves one son, Eugene J. Bass, and two grandchildren, Pauline E. and Carl H. Bass, all residing at the farm home; one brother, Edwin Bass, of Adams Centre, and one sisters, Mrs. D. E. Simmons, of Syracuse.
The funeral will be held from the farm home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, Rev. R.S. Stolz, pastor of Adams Baptist church, officiating, with interment in Brookside cemetery.
