Tying the knot at 10 knots up the Hudson

It??s a known fact that preparing for a wedding, large or small, involves lots of decision-making, setting up a timetable and paying attention to picayune details.
However, if the wedding is to take place on board a boat, there??s a different course to chart - literally.
Charting this course was what retired Col. Donald G. Weiss had to figure out. He had to pilot his 53-foot yacht from its home berth at Saybrook, Connecticut, to the Tarrytown Boat Club as one of his chores in preparation for his daughter??s big day.
Marcie Joanne Weiss, daughter of Col. and Mrs. Weiss of Briarcliff, was married to Thomas Michael Bassett Sunday, July 11, on the deck of the yacht "Inspiration" as it cruised up the Hudson River. Bassett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bassett also of Briarcliff.
Engaged in March, the pair wanted an outdoor wedding, and one out of the ordinary. Since they both like boats, Col. Weiss suggested the Hudson with a reception at the Officers Club at West Point.
Every bride hopes for a sunny day, but in this case, there was much conjecture about setting the date. ??Thank heaven we didn??t decide on a weekend this June,? said the bridegroom.
A run-through is standard before any wedding so that bridal party members know where to stand. This rehearsal included ascertaining what placement of all 23 guests on board would insure proper weight balance. Another preamble was pacing off the pilings at the West point pier to assure enough room.
After a 10-hour trip from Saybrook, the yacht was moored at Tarrytown because that marina could handle it. The tides dictated that the Inspiration leave the boat club Sunday at 10 a.m.
Once past Ossining, Ms. Weiss went below deck to don her white eyelet and lace dress and arrange stephanotis in her hair to match her bouquet. She had selected a ballerina length dress for ease of movement on the boat instead of a long gown. ??And sneakers would have been the best thing to wear,? said Marcie. ??My father said the shoes I had bought might damage the fiberglass deck of the yacht,? So, she bought other sandals with a different heel to wear on the boat and changed to the original pair for the reception.
The bridegroom wore white slacks, a blue blazer, regimental striped tie and topsiders. His brother, John T. Bassett, was best man and the bride??s sister, Mrs. Judson M. Reiss, was matron of honor.
The marriage was performed by New York State Supreme Court Judge George Beisheim Jr. as the boat cruised between Croton Point and Indian Point near Haverstraw Bay, a wide point of the Hudson where river traffic wouldn??t interfere. The yacht has stabilizers and was proceeding at about 10 knots at the time.
The newlyweds were the last to disembark at West Point and then joined the more than 100 guests at the reception. There was a seven-piece band at the Officers Club in contrast to the lone musician playing the wedding march on the yacht.
The new Mr. and Mrs. Bassett will reside in Ossining. They both grew up in Briarcliff and their families have been friends for some 20 years. Mrs. Bassett, a 1979 honors graduate of Adelphi University as a registered nurse, is a professional sales representative with Winthrop Laboratories. The bridegroom, a 1975 business administration graduate of Nichols College, Dudley Hill, Massachusetts, is an account executive with the Rockefeller Center Construction Corp. in New York City.
The bridegroom??s father is a vice president of County Asphalt in Tarrytown and chairman of the Westchester-Hudson Valley Construction Industry Council and a member of the Briarcliff Manor Planning Board. The bride??s father is president of Donald G. Weiss and Co., a public relations and fund-raising firm, and serves as a consultant on external affairs to the International Center for the Disabled.

Marcie Weiss Bride of Thomas Bassett
Marcie Joanne Weiss, daughter of Col. Donald G. Weiss, U.S.A., retired, and Mrs. Weiss, was married yesterday to Thomas Michael Bassett, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Bassett. Both families are of Briarcliff Manor, New York. State Supreme Court Justice George Beisheim Jr. performed the ceremony aboard the yacht "Inspiration" on the Hudson River en route to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where a reception was held at the Officers' Club.
The bride, who was graduated from Adelphi University as a registered nurse, is sales representative in Westchester and Rockland Counties for Winthrop Laboratories, a New York pharmaceutical company. Her father is president of Donald G. Weiss & Company, a public relations and fund-rasising concern, and consultant on external affairs to the ICD International Center for the Disabled.
Mr. Bassett, an account executive with the Rockefeller Center Construction Corporation, was graduated from Nichols College. His father is vice president of County Asphalt Inc. in Tarrytown, New York, and chairman of the Westchester-Hudson Valley Construction Industry Council.

Marcie Bassett
Marcie Bassett passed away Sunday, June 7, 2026 at age 71 at her farm in Bloomingdale, GA. It was not sudden, it was peaceful. Marcie had a very fulfilling life. She excelled academically, professionally and personally. When she left pharmaceutical sales after nursing she started Fellowship Farm in Millbrook, NY later relocating to Wellington, FL. She boarded horses and taught scores of children how to ride. The name Fellowship Farm was derived from her Father's yacht 'The Fellowship' on which she and Thomas were married as it cruised up the Hudson River 44 years ago next month. Marcie continued showing and competing herself and training her students till she and the horses retired from competition a dozen years ago when she and Thomas relocated the farm to Bloomi??ngdale (Savannah) to live out their years. It was then that Marcie started breeding and showing their English Bulldogs. One, Demon, which she co-owned with her friend Julie went on to be Best of Breed at Westminster in 2017. Along the way she surfed the waters of the Atlantic, snow skied the mountains of the East and West, ran marathons, biked through Banff in Canada, the Cotswolds in England, hiked mountains in Tennessee, rode horseback in Hawaii and through the fields of France on her way to Paris, toured Italy and went on safari in Africa. It was truly a life of adventure. Marcie was truly liked and loved and will be remembered and missed by all that knew her. In addition to her husband Thomas, she is survived by her sister Jacqui Reiss and her daughter Melanie. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Arrangements are being handled by Baker McCullough Funeral Home-Garden City Chapel.
